Vivien Leigh, and her first husband, Leigh Holman were wed on the twentieth of December in 1932 at St. James, Spanish Place. A guest recalls, “All I could remember was how thin and shy she looked. Yes, a shy little bride in white satin with puff sleeves and carried chrysanthemums. But it is her demureness that remains in my memory.”

Both Jayne and Marilyn were friends not enemies. Jayne tried to convince the public on several occasions to stop comparing her to Marilyn. Jayne stated that “Marilyn and I are entirely different, We’ve never really been in competition.” Marilyn wasn’t threatened by her, she told her friend James Haspiel ” I just wish she’d realize that there’s room for everyone.” In 1963 a letter addressed to Jayne by a fan asked her about the tragedy of Marilyn’s death. Jayne wrote back saying “You mentioned Marilyn Monroe. This was a very tragic thing in my life as Marilyn and I were extremely good friends. When something like this happens there isn’t any explanation for it. It is hard to describe your feelings about it because everything seems to go out of kilter. It’s not only a loss as a personal friend, but Hollywood and the world has lost a great personality because she had it and even in death she still has it because the name of Marilyn Monroe will always be revered in Hollywood.”

“I shall miss you with passion and wild regret. I wish I could borrow a minute portion of your passion and commitment, but there you are—cold is cold as ice is ice. Try and look after yourself.”— Richard Burton, from a letter to Elizabeth Taylor written c. June 1973
